#6825 Cosmic Comet
The #6825 Cosmic Comet was the very first LEGO space set I got. Because this blog covers my childhood LEGO sets in reverse chronological order, it will sadly also be the last space set on this blog…
The Cosmic Comet was released in 1985 and a good friend gave it to me for my birthday ’87. I remember this friend's family had plenty of classic space sets dismantled in their LEGO bin, but I think they may have belonged to his older siblings because I can’t recall seeing them built. Who knows, maybe the original Galaxy Explorer was there, right under my nose!
We start out simple placing two wings, but they're positioned backwards, already an unexpected technique for eight year old me!
The underside is surprisingly complex, with the SNOT pieces for front landing gear also providing a greebly look.
The classic space seat is a must for this type of craft. This was my first part of that kind and I remember thinking it was cool, but I didn't find many other usages for it at the time, even though it serves as a bracket for sideways building.
The space gun part was also my first, and I remember finding it weird mounting it backwards.
The light gray bars with clip at the sides of the seat are probably the most brittle parts in my collection, I think I’ve had to order replacements for every one of them—more than once! In this build they’re at least not under stress on display, like they are on my Mega Core Magnetizer…
After adding some cool parts like transparent dishes and flexible hoses, the build is completed. It’s a great little flyer, compact and swooshable, with that beautiful classic space colour scheme. This was not just my first space set, it was also the only one in the classic blue, and the only one with a classic space minifigure. After this it was all Futuron, Space Police, and M-Tron for me.
So that’s it, no more space themed sets on this blog. But I think you’ll all like the slew of classic town sets that are coming up next. There will be 4-stud wide vehicles and buildings with open backside galore for years to come, no one will be disappointed!
