#6601 Ice Cream Cart

I got this cute little set for my birthday in 1985 from a friend and classmate who lived down the street. #6601 Ice Cream Cart had been released earlier that same year.

My instructions booklet for this one is not in very good condition. I do have a vague memory of finding my little sister drooling/chewing on it… She was actually born around the release of this set, so it is a plausible explanation!

Step 2

With such a small set, of course the build will not take very long. Using the vehicle base frame is actually quite clever, as it provides both wheel arches and the bottom shape of the ice-box in one piece.

Step 3

I'm not sure if the red taps are meant to represent soft ice dispensers?

Step 4

The front of the cart gets a nice printed brick depicting what looks like an ice-pop. I treasured this piece as a kid, and I'm glad it had not been lost.

Step 5

Two printed tiles form the openable lid of the cart. I remember liking these pieces too, but didn't do many builds where they were useful. I notice now that I placed them in the wrong orientation for the photos… sorry about that!

Step 6

The cart gets a standard pair of wheels and a retractable stand. When the stand is in the up position for rolling the cart, there is only minimal ground clearance. I guess our ice-cream vendor will have to stick to paved roads!

The final build

Finishing the cart with an umbrella, we're ready to serve some ice on the streets! When I look at the parts now, it must have been like a white hinge-piece battle pack for my younger self, I used those pieces a lot for my own creations!

Alternative builds

The back of the instructions provide three simple alternative builds. I don't quite understand what the cart to the left would be used for, but they all look solid and rather summery!
